Construction Project Manager by week, crazy mountain biker by weekend. Throw in a few evening road rides in there for good measure.
Plus, I help out at a shop and thus, that provides me with "employee discount" privaledges.

4 - I am lucky to know a few pros or wanna be pros. I get lots of hand me downs and/or bikes they are no longer allowed to ride. So I find good deals that way
5 - shop online
6 - buy OLD product. 2005 eh? How bout that 2003 bike in the corner...I will give you 800
Lots of ways to save
