night ride light

I plan to start riding at full moon nights and looking for a good flash light. Many types are available. What should I look for? How many candlepower is enough? Should I go for the LED or HALOGEN?

Thanks. does it make sense to purchase low price (less than $100) lights for night singles rides?

I made my own. It was cheep and easy. I'm using a 20w halogen and a sealed lead-acid battery strapped to a hacked bottle cage. I think I spent a total of 12 dollars and got a spare bulb. It goes for almost 3 hours.

Curious what you used for a light housing? I have the battery, connectors, etc but haven't found anything suitable for a housing. I am hesitant to use PVC because of the heat generated.

I am using an 2.25 inch (lens diameter) aluminum flashlight housing that I cut down to about 3 inchs. I thought about buying a MagLight and grinding on it but this one was two bucks. I have it mounted to an old CatEye handlebar mount via two small screws. The lens melted almost instantly so i got a bulb that has its own lens.
