    Wheels

Where does a 1,17 Mavic rim come in the grand scheme of things? Its obviously an entry level as its on a 400 bike so what could you upgrade to from that? What makes the strength of a wheel? Are hubs and spokes/build as important as the rim? I've only just got this bike a month ago but I've caught the upgrading bug

I don't know about the wheel itself

But I don't fall for the engineering garble about spokes etc. It comes down to wheel build overall. The builder is most important, then rim...I know guys who have crappy rims built well and they are STRONG. Get a good wheelbuilder, decent rim, good hub and ride it hard

Engineering Garble about spokes? Spokes play a large part in a wheel build. A system is only as strong as it weakest component. Nothing wrong with a generic spoke but you can optimize a wheel with a good spoke but as mentioned if it isn't put together well it is still just a bunch of nice parts seperately.

FYI some spokes can save as much as 1/4 lb over generic spokes per wheel. I think more importantly is spoke tensions which is all in the wheel builder. Rims more so play a part in dirability since even a well built 517 isn't as strong as othe rims like Rhynolites.
