Bike makes whirring noise while pedalling...

I have a trek 3700 which is 4 years old and in awesome condition. However while pedalling the bike is making a sort of whirring noise ang gets stiffer than normal. It happens once per turn of the crank and comes from the crank area. It is a lot more obvious in higher gears but still occurs in lower ones.
