So, how old are you, mountain biker??

I picked up mountain biking in what is almost entirely a college town, so I never really thought about it but just assumed that most mountain bikers were younger. I recently moved to a much bigger town and have had my ass kicked by several people decades older than me, and generally just see that a lot of riders are older. So, how old are you??

What is with with 40-something-year-olds & being n ridiculously good shape? Both of my parents just hit 51 & they're starting to calm down a little, but in their late 40's they were both in incredibly good shape & they can both still out-ride & out-run me.

for my size i am pretty fast and have a fair bit of endurance. i am the fastest person i know on a mountain bike. the only people that seem to be able to keep up or pass me are the people on road bike with those super narrow tires.

60... just turned. Lot of the stronger riders I know are in their 60's and 70's. I just hope to keep riding by 70...

Ahhh, that statement means nothing when you're talking about getting passed by roadies.

43 and while I am slower (due to 15+ years of not riding), my friends who are still riding are faster now than in their 20's.

I don't get it. Is it experience in taking lines and just knowing exactly what to do and when? Is it some type of amped up old-man strength phemomenon?? I find it equally fascinating and depressing all at the same time. I'm 24, btw.

There's something interesting I remember reading regarding the difference between Formula 1 racing and the World Rally Championship. F1 champions tend to be in their 20s and WRC champions tend to be in their 30s. Not sure why, but I think experience in terms of preservation and "instinct" might get better honed with age. I suspect there is a law-of-diminishing returns on this though.

I'm 40 and consistently suck.

With age comes experience, but it doesn't always equal increased speed.

^^ True. Although I am faster and go bigger than I did five years ago (I think anyway). I'm afraid of the day when I stop progressing and begin to slow down and don't tackle bigger stuff.
