Best beginner bike that can take a knock/jump

Hi All,

I'm from south africa and thinking of having a bike brought out from the states by a friend.

I don't have a big budget, so I'm looking for something around $1000.

I do a fair bit of trail riding, but I really enjoy the more technical stuff and have had a lot of fun just messing around on some jumps/gaps. I'm starting to notice that it's taking a toll on my very basic bike here (I've got a Silverback Reno, which is as basic as they come!). I want something that I can use on trails...but that I won't be cringing every time I see something I can ramp up/off/over!

So is this a workable budget? If so, what would you recommend?

Also..any suggestions for where (online) I can order from would be very useful.

Thanks a lot..

Thanks Zephyr for the great links...those are great prices.

Johnny... there's tons of lbs's and getting tubes is as easy as a trip up the road... it's the bikes that cost a lot cos they all have to be imported.

He might be in/near the city in South Africa, rather than a remote part in the middle of nowhere like we so often hear about here in the states.
