How far will you drive to ride a good trail?

From my house, I can get to some flat, gravel roads in about 2 miles. I can easily get away from traffic. However, if I want to get on a good, for-real mountain bike trail I've got to drive at least 25 miles, and as far as 45 miles. I'll only do that once every week or two. Just curious - how far do you guys drive to get to some good trails?

The most I've ever driven was just under 6 hours. That was for a weekend trip though. If it was just a day trip, I'd probably cap it off around 2 hours.

EDIT: It looks like I misunderstood the question. Most of my rides are somewhere between "ride out my door to the trail" and 45 minutes away.

Well, honestly, I probably wouldn't have gotten that interested in MTBing if there weren't a half decent 2 mi. (or so) section of trail right here in town, an easy ride from where I live. I just decided to try it out one day and loved it. In a couple years time, if I'm still riding (and so far I've definitely got the bug), we'll see how far I'm willing to drive.

Pretty far. The good stuff in Tahoe is about 100 miles from here. This month alone I've done a Tahoe ride, a ride almost in Tahoe, multiple rides in the foothills 40-50 miles away and will do one about 90 miles away next weekend. My normal weekend drive is 40 miles one way to the trails.

15 minutes out of town, about 10 miles away, 200 miles of singletrack goodness.

I've taken trips to the Southwest and points in between a number of years in a row. A month and 3000 miles to Southern Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Utah (Moab and lots of others), New Mexico, Arizona. Absolutely worth all the driving to do all that great riding.

How Far Will You Drive...

@@@

During our seasonal migrations, quite a ways. We have time.

San Juan Islands to Idaho Panhandle for the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and Route of the Hiawatha.
That's about 280 crow miles, more by road. From there thru Montana to Moab for a bit of fun. Then to the River Mts Loop in NV and down to SoCal. We did about 2800 miles on the migration south.

During Winter Quarters, not too far. Usually in county. I work 5-6 days the week to fund four months off in the summer so when the weekend comes, I am not ambitious. Happily my entry point to a whole batch of local trails is about 200 yds. thataway.

Can't think of anything worth riding less than 30 minutes drive. I'm ok with 1 hour each way, but more than that and I'm thinking of making it a weekender.

I have done 3 hours for a single day...I suppose that is about my limit unless I am making a weekend...then maybe 6 hours?

I have three different trails that I ride on a regular basis and they are each anywhere from 15-30 mins away.

I used to regularly drive from Dallas to Austin for the day (~200mi, ~3hr). We'd ride a few different trails and occasionally stay with friends but it was often just for the day. More recently though, I usually stay within 15 miles of home (Denver) but I do occasionally drive up to the mountains to ride up one of the ski hills (1-2hrs) and a six hour drive for the weekend isn't out of the question.

My usuals range from 0-15 minutes from work; but I have gone 1,200 mi. to Breckenridge, 800 to Park City and 18 hours straight through (1,100 mi.) to Sea Otter.

Galbraith Mtn is about a 45 min drive. 5 hrs going to Whistler and 4.5 to Spokane, WA to hit BEacon Hill. Stevens Pass ski resort is building a bike park so that'll be 2.5hrs. Cant wait.

I live in Alpharetta, GA (just north of Atlanta) and started riding a couple months ago. My plan is to ride all trails nearby and expand from there. I have a group of friends who I ride with, so if we go far enough away, then we'll probably camp out. So.... we rode Big Creek Park, Central Park, and plan to ride Blankets Creek this weekend.

Can't let distance get in the way of adventure....

Whistler is pretty small...so would have to say everywhere. My favorite spots for a quick jaunt would have to be lost lake trails. For a challenge I head either to emerald or out to function. Lots of options depending on which bike and what i want to ride

Its been a slow year and a half for riding, I haven't been in town much. I definitely miss it

It's on a very slow boat from Singapore with the USFS. I would not hold my breath. Schweitzer will probably get a World Cup before Stevens Pass has summer lifts.

The latest news.

uh, from the bay area I drove to SLC, Moab and Fruita this summer.......so that's kind of far.

As penance I ride 8 miles on the road up a hill to get to the trails here.
