Loose Quick Release
 

Has anybody had their quick release vibrate loose while riding? My front did this morning. And those things were tight when I started. I'm paranoid about keeping them tight. I know hard braking with disc brakes can sometimes loosen the quick release, but I have V-Brakes.

If the QR is as tight as it should be, it would be very close to impossible for it to vibrate open. All that I've seen have a knurled surface (little teeth) to help with this. Are you sure that the lever didn't get caught on something and pulled part of the way open? Or that there wasn't a bunch of crap on the QR (my biggest problem) that just made it feel tight?

I try to keep the lock straight up or back to prevent it getting caught, and I can't think of what I would have caught on it. But I did take a small spill that could have knocked it loose somehow. I suppose I need to look my bike over a little better after I wreck it.

Err, clean your quick releases? For your front, the quick release should be parallel with your fork, pointing up and the rear should be parrallel with the chainstay. When you close it, it shoould leave a clear imprint on your palm. Use something such as the fork or frame to help close it, using leverage. It's hard but worth it.

I really don't think tightness is the issue. It had to have been the wreck and/or dirty quick releases. That is something else I need to work on, keeping my components clean.

And it's probably worth it to try out bolt-on skewers, though a cleaning job and not wrecking might be an equally effective solution.
