    48/19 and 38/15 different?

I tend to think that 48/19 and 38/15 are similar gears and if so why does 38/15 feel lighter. I find that on a climb I feel the two gears different. Any expert explaination to this.

This might be a question for the roadies. They are usually more gear oriented than we are.

They are close but according to my little gearing calculator you gearing for 48/19 is 1.26 and the gearing for 38/15 is a little harder at 1.6. Really the 48 one should be easier.

they are virtually the same gear ratio - within round off error. If the 38/15 feels easier it may simply be the chain angle difference from the front chain ring to the rear cog with each setting. A straighter chain will be more efficient than an angled chain.

    happy trails
