I can get this bike for a steal, but not sure if it's right!

So my 1992 specialized rockhopper is about to die and I am looking for a new bike. I want to Mtn. Bike in the summer and I also would most likely use the bike to go to school (2.5mi commute). I hate road bikes, and really can only afford one bike. I should say i will use my 1992 bike until it breaks down, but I am not against using my new mtn. bike for the commute as well.

With that said, I am deciding between a Specialized Hard Rock Disc and a Scott Scale 29 Comp. The Hard Rock runs about $470 or so and the Scott I can get from LL Bean with a 33% discount, so an $850 bike for $570 or so.

I assume it's worth to spend the $100 more to get the Scott because in my mind the higher the price, the better the bike. Obviously that's not always true, but I have been told that Scott produces a quality bike and would just like some general feedback from the forum. I would really appreciate it as I am not always sure when it comes to bikes.

Different bikes. You link to the 26" wheeled Hardrock and the 29" Scott.

Ride them both -- buy the one you like to ride better.

Based on list prices (I have no idea what these actually sell for in stores), the Scott is a good deal with your 33% off...but not if you prefer riding the Hardrock.
May your tires or beer never be flat.
