what to look for when buying a trainer

i'm still rather new to mtb and as the winter comes, i wont to go into it better than last year, so i'm buying a trainer well 2 i dont want to spen a heap of money for them. my only concerns are tire compatability and a variety of workout selections. dont want to have to be a bikemechanic to jump on the trainer and get my work out. and besides if this winter is mild enough i would like a quick transaction. but i may be way in left field with my concerns but thats what comes to mind when i think of buying a trainer.
you mean this is'n the top of the hill

I personally bought a rim based trainer instead of wheel based. I could use any rear rim and it didn't matter if I had rubber or not. I would have my bike setup...ride on the trainer, if it was nice, I unlocked the rear wheel and took off.
