First mountain bike suggestions please!

I'm looking to buy my first mountain bike and would like to keep it under $600 if possible. I already have a road bike and plan to keep that as my primary exercise bike. Given that, I'm interested in the Felt Nine Trail ($600 msrp) and Specialized Hardrock Disc ($520). Any input about these two bikes? How are the components on these bikes, or what can I expect on a similarly priced bike? Are there any brands or models you can direct me to?

Thanks in advance!

other than what you mentioned, you can also look at Trek. i would sit on each of them, ride them if you can, and go for the one that is most comfortable. all good bikes, you can always upgrade parts later.

Check out your bike dealer. Right now we're having a Spring sale. I would imagine a lot of other places are too? With that said, the Hard Rock disc is a great bike for the money, but the Rockhopper isn't a whole lot more? Rule of thumb is to go a little over what you originally planned to spend, you will be happier in the long run.,,,,BD

I'm not sure what kind of riding you're planning on, but I have a serious crush on my Scott. I imagine that the cheaper models also rock...
