Shoe Upgrade mystery

I have a couple years of experience on SPD pedals with some low-end Lake lace-up shoes.
Our trails are all technical rock-garden style -- no grand mountainous vistas here.

Upgraded to Specialized Comp Carbon shoes, and new Shimano SPD cleats.
Pedaling efficiency is great with stiffer soles, but....

The right shoe is susceptible to pulling straight up & out.
On technical downhills, it's downright scary.

Checked the cleats are installed pointy end forward, tightened the pedal springs, now what?

Ditch the spd's for something clipless but with a cage around it, like a Crank Brothers Mallet C or a Time Atac Z pedal.
