Walmart I think. Or is the question about the cheapest bike that you can actually take to a trail? About $400 at a bike shop and you shouldn't be too frustrated.

I'd have to agree with the poster above. Walmart bikes are usually the cheapest, but the quality is going to be a problem.

Many of the x-mart mountain bikes in the small print on the tags that come with them (or the instruction manual that you won't get until you buy the bike) actually say the bike is not meant to be ridden off road.

I think the instruction manual that came with my Komodo said that too. Something about jumps, wheelies, and trails being dangerous and not what the bike was designed for. Okay, Jamis instruction manual writers, I'm sure you guys designed a 32lb hardtail as a campus commuter.

$77.77 for this one
or $99.99 for this full suspension bike

Actually Gary Fisher does the same thing. My Hoo Koo e Koo, which was one of the nicest hardtails they made at the time, had some language in the manual about not being meant for anything but smooth trails. At least they let you go off-road.

I got my Trek 4000 for free, dug it out of the trash.

The cheapest one I've bought was a 1991 GT Outpost I got a few weeks ago for $8.12 at the Salvation Army.

I sold my GT Outpost for $75. My best flip yet, percentage-wise.

32lbs? that is a campus commuter as far as I'm concerned. My current ride is 23.1 w/o pedals and I am looking for ways to lighten it up.

to the OP, I've heard of people getting killer (no pun intended) deals at estate sales. A fellow customer of my local LBS got a 5 year old Specialized in good condition that just needed new rubber and was good to go. Turned out to be a $1200 bike that he paid $250 for.

Ouch! It's heavy because it's overbuilt.

Just because something slightly resembles a mountain bike (like those Walmart bikes and that Canadian Tire bike), does not mean it actually is a mountain bike.

Is the geometry bad for climbing, or just the weight?

I'm sure there are at least a couple downhill frames made in china.

Is there really a point to your questioning?

Are you just BF's latest, greatest ESL troll?
