Welcome to Bike Forums!

I believe what you are going to need to look for is a Freeride bike. It's not just for downhill and it's not just for "stunts". Also, we're going to need your definition of "not too expensive".

Unfortunately, there's NO WAY you're going to pull off a downhill bike for 300. Probably not even used, unless you get insanely lucky. Just not happening. You *may* be able to find a DJ on Craigslist for that, which is ideal for dirt jump tricks and urban, but not so much for downhill. A FRHT would work if you can find one on Craigslist, but a hardtail isn't going to be great for downhill, and depending on what kind of tricks, you're talking about, it might not be ideal for them either (for example, a dedicated DJ will do better on dirt jumps). This may be the closest you'll come new for your price range, but it's a far cry from a downhill bike, and again, its geometry is definitely not that of a DJ. Given that price range and the description of using it for tricks...I'm actually thinking BMX. Either this or this (a little bigger) is nice and in your price range. Obviously, neither will work for downhill at all, but depending on what kind of tricks you're talking about, it might actually be ideal. Then you can always buy a downhill bike later on down the line when you get some money, or you can rent when you go to a lift-serviced mountain.

Go to your local bike shop and talk to them. Good luck!
