I can Afford A Good Bike...

I've worked out a plan for saving money, and when I'm done I'll have like 600 dollars. I want a dual suspension bike. What Should I get? I can finally have a bike that is strong and will not break. What bike should I get? I feel so relieved to have the money to buy a good bike, and I have 200 now. I will do shoveling, raking and chores to get the money, I'll make like 30 dollars a day.

If you want a decent FS bike they start at about $1000 new.

Or you could go the used route.

Specialized seems to make some of the best FS bikes around, take a look at their bikes. May be out of your price range though.

what a dampener on the kid. though true enough, FS bikes are more expensive than that. i'd say if you want a good FS, keep working at it and strike a deal with your folks to subsidise the rest of the bike or get a loan from them.

Went to my lbs, Is A Trek Fuel 70 good? Should I just get a gary fisher? the trek fs is like $897 It looks pretty decent to me, My main choices are gary fisher and trek there was also a trek 8500 that looked enticing tell me what to go with remember I XC bike and I need power to get up hills. I know that FS takes up some power and turns it to "mush" but this bike has 4 pivot points, If I got some eggbeater pedals then could I have a decent bike to ride? I kill cheap bikes in three days and I hate it I need something that will last me for a 900 dollar price, my parents will give me 300 because they are really cool and I work hard doing outside chores.

I would buy a gaint. i have a warp ds2 and i found out that if u change the rear shock from 7" eye to eye, to an 8" eye to eye, you can get 7inches of usable travel instead of the stock 5.

careful with the fuels - carbon frames are light but as you can see form many posts already, they aren't as strong as some. xc should be fine for it though but no harder i'd expect. as for pedal bob, i think the horst link design is supposed to reduce (but not eliminate) the loss of power going uphill. i'd go the 8500 over the fuel since you can get better parts with your money, and FS is strictly a luxury if you're going to be doing mainly xc riding.

but that's just my ideas over the TWO choices. if it were up to me, i'd demand a burrito on top of the nachos to make sure i get my value for money.

back to topic... Based on my limited shopping around.. I am a hardtail rider, but I have been shopping around for a while now. full suspension bikes start to get pretty decent at 1000+ range. a $600 full suspension bike will likely be a crap bike.

a $600 hardtail will be an AWESOME bike, with good fork. Maybe check out the rockhopper line at specialized. I can't recommend the RST Gila that comes with hardrock, but I do like the hardrock's frame. My hardrock Sport 2004 was about $320. Throw in another 300, heck, 600 for $900 total you can get a really awesome hardtail.

I think $900 may be on the low end for a qualith full suspension, unless you buy it used. If you buy new, you're going to break crappy parts on it, in my opinion if you ride hard.

I am probably going to see if I can get one myself in the $1200-$1500 budget. Ouch. I personallly have my eye on the Kona and Specialized brand.

Ever read the warning label on a Dr. Pepper bottle? I dont call that a good thing... I no longer drink it due to too many...accidents... Besides, Dew has far superior taste and waking power.

Anyways, back to topic. Its prolly not too realistic to get a good FS bike for $600. But remember x-mas is comming up. Tell all your family and friends you want money to start a college fund or something. Ok, lieing is bad. Lots of places look for temporary help during the holidays if your old enough to legally hold a job.

DECENT dual bikes start at $1000 + and a the Giant range are great and there about $1499AU. Now i saw a dual suspension bike that was under $200AU dollars and that would be like $150 or something US and it wasn't a HUFFY!!!! I hope they dont start a trend with new brands, crap bikes. around 600, hmm try front fork, you willl get better quality.

I would ask a more simple question.... You sound young and you want to ride efficiently .....SO......why a not a hardtail with a good front fork. Still stay in the $900 price range and get a better bike.

for now until $$ is not an issue forget the Egg-beaters they are great pedals but pricey (for you) put more money into the bike and use standard SPD's that will come with it. Good LUck...

When is money ever not an issue? When I was a kid, I just figured by the time I hit my 30s I won't need to work much, I'll be rich. Money'll be just there.

I'm still working my butt off.. Ah. Youth.

edit: I sounded bitter about work.. nah.. Love my job, as the owner of an IT company, and being the R&D guy among the folks in the company. If you gotta work into your 30s and beyond, it might as well be doing something you love

Cool, Ive been looking for an IT job since August when I got laid off for lack of funding.

Oh yea back on topic again...
Its completely possible to get a pretty good hardtail bike for around $600. I got my Iguana on sale and love it. I know Ill eventually start upgrading stuff though once I actually get a chance to ride it rough enough to break something.

edit:
Not saying its flimsy either! Its just something that happens.

I vote for a nice hardtail with your money.

Also, MD has yellow dye #5 which is carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic.

I'd rather ride a $900 hardtail than a $900 full suspension in general. Sometimes there are amazing deals to be had (I got my Enduro for just over $1000, new!) but you can't count on it. A good hardtail frame with good components and a really nice fork would be an awesome setup.

BTW...all those rumors about Yellow 5 are just urban legends. There haven't been any studies proving that. Not to say that it can't be possible, but there's no hard evidence to support the rumors.
