Shimano pedals

Could someone tell me which of these Shimano pedals are of better quality - the PD505s or PD520s? Thanks.

Judging by your post status, sorry if I'm wrong, you seem to be new to cycling.

I highly recommend to test out clipless before you go clipless because some people, like me, do not prefer the set up.

I find myself in a awkward position with clipless, time laboring to get in, small payout over toe clips and the price

For mountain biking, I actually go platform, the "bmx" pedals I find to give good grip, and lots of area to step on. This is because I like to maneuver my foot around when I start on a technical run

And of course, some platforms can be set up to use toe clips and some have clipless set ups underneath on the flipside

To your question, I don't believe that there is a major difference with the pedals, but I think one came out earlier and the other replaced the older set up, so go with the one with the most popular and cheaper set up possible.

Thanks BotByte, but not new to cycling - been doing it now for 20 years on and off. I used to race BMX, then MTB cross country. Took some time away from the bike and now been hitting the road for the past 5 years or so. I know, the pedals I ask about are MTB and not road pedals, but I like the double sided entry and currently have a pair of 505's on my bike. I took these pedals from my last MTB and have been using them on my road bike for the past five years. They are getting old, a bit shotty, and I'm looking for a replacement set. I see the 520's selling for around $50-ish and was ready to get them, but then found some NOS 505's selling for $30 which is what sparked this thread... Thanks.

The designs are only little tweaks so I would say to go for the upgrade if you wish to spend the money. I would only replace the pedals, if it was me.

As for the 505s versus 520s, the 520s are a bit better. Lighter, blind-ended axle, lower profile. Plus you can get THREE different colors now! (black, silver or white). 520 is good bang for the buck. 505s are good tough pedals too, though. When deciding, do note whether both sets are coming with cleats or not.

Thanks, I didn't know they made a 540. They look nice, more sleek profile over the 520.

Thanks for the info, mechBgon.
