How to service Egg Beater 1s?
 

I tried to do a search but I didn't really come up with anything concrete. The instructional video on the Crank Bros. website showed a version of the pedal with a rubber end cap, but my pedals have what looks like threaded caps with slot in them. I assumed that you could just spin it off in the same old lefty-loosey fashion, but they aren't coming off for me. Am I doing something wrong? I just want to put some grease in them...

If it's threaded it will come off when you turn it counter-clockwise... otherwise it only appears threaded and you should pry it out.

Try clockwise, they may be reverse threaded. If not, then it's pressed in.

You should definitely be able to unscrew it with standard counter-clockwise effort. If you're having trouble, I'd try contacting CB tech support.

Well I gave it another go and totally jacked up the end cap on one of the pedals. I will now contact Crank Bros., haha.

I bought them barely used, and they still spin great, but I just wanted to grease up a little before I mounted them. Oh well... I'll see what CB says, or else I'll just worry about maintenance when I get to the overhaul point.

I have the same - lefty loosey. They can get stubborn when dirty - I found the bigger the screw driver the better. You will need the plastic grease tool that comes with the pedals and a little grease gun. Thread the tool into where the plastic cap was then squirt grease through the little hole. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=203658

I emailed Crank Brothers when I initially encountered this problem and they got back to me today. The customer service rep said that sometimes you have to jam the screwdriver in pretty hard to get it to catch and to avoid badly gouging the slot (as I did).

Plus, they'll be sending me out some new end caps for free!
