Upgrading shifters and crank on a 2009 Rockhopper.

I'm looking to upgrade the crank and shifters on my 2009 Rockhopper Comp Disc 29er and was wondering if there were any glaringly obvious upgrades that I should consider. I should state that I'm looking to upgrade the shifters because they've never shifted smooth even after visits to three different shops and I've actually had one explode (Yes it literally blew into pieces on a ride) and you can see them bulge when you press them. The crank isn't as big of an issue but I figured I'd consider upgrading it while I had the bike apart. The FD might get a stare down as well but we'll see how the others go.
