Another exciting day. In response to an ad I placed, I got offered a F-F-T Bianchi of a type I was unfamiliar with. It is a 1988 (?) steel framed "Super Grizzly" with a complete Deore XT group. I checked it out by riding it and found that the bike is actually pretty good for its age. There are three slightly oval Shimano BioPace sprockets - 48 X 38 X 28 teeth, and the largest sprocket looks like it is worn. See the pictures, especially the last one.

What are the odds that I can find a replacement for the 48-tooth sprocket or the whole set ??

Are these BioPace things totally unobtainable ??

Chances of finding a NOS 48t Biopace ring are slim. Hell, even trying to find a standard 46t big ring is going to be difficult, not impossible. The Shimano biopace concept fizzled out many years ago but has been revised by Rotor. Check them out if you REALLY want an oval ring.

Strangely enough, after checking out the bike I checked out eBay and found that there are quite a few 46t and 48t Shimano BioPace 110 BCD sprockets, (including complete 84 - 38 - 28 sets with cranks). I have sent off emails to a couple of them to see if they will ship to Canada.

I have decided to replace just the one ring rather than all three because I suspect I will be using the largest sprocket the most and it is the worst condition.

We'll see how much use I get out of it before I put any serious money into fixing it up.

I'd never even heard of it before I got offered this one. Last night I found a 48 and 38 tooth BioPace with 110mm BCD for $10 each on eBay from the same seller - plus another $10 for postage. I'm the only one who bid. Got them both.
