New Bike Day

2010 Giant Trance X4
Brand New for $839.99

Just picked it up at lunch. Hoping the rain holds off so I can ride it after work. It is replacing a 1997 Specialized Ground Control which I had bought new in '98.

I was planning on test riding more bikes and had a budget that would include some 29er full suspensions, but this price is a good one so after a little research and a quick test ride to confirm the size, I went for it.

Turns out I rented a Trance X in 2008 for a seven hour ride in Queenstown NZ and had no problems with it then, so I think I'll be happy with this one for a number of years.

The rented Trance and the problems and I can cause for it:

Wow what a price on that. Isn't it usually around $1400-1500? I would take the money you saved and upgrade some of the parts. Maybe a Fox fork and some X7's...

Either way, killer deal man, congrats. go ride the heck out of it now!

And now with a little bit of mud on it:

As for upgrades to the Trance ... are you kidding? I'm coming from a 14 year old bike that was already outdated 12 years ago. I'm happy I kept the Specialized running so long, but there is no comparison. It was so nice having (in order of what I appreciated most): (1) Brakes that just work and don't let a little mud or water get in the way of their job; (2) gears that simply shift when you press/pull the lever even if maybe you should have made that shift 100 feet earlier before cranking up the hill; (3) suspension that, like the gears, just worked without complaint.

So, nope, no upgrades any time soon unless I break something. (Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind about that if I come across a good deal on a Fox 32 or something similar.)
