2nd ride report and gear questions/help
Hey guys!
I just did my second mountain ride on an even more technical trail than the first one. Lots of slick rock, some really crazy rocks to scale, and the usual lots and tricky descents. I didn't fall nearly as much today as I did on friday, which is interesting because this trail was a lot more difficult. I did give up on a lot of the more dangerous looking parts and just walk my bike because I'm not fully comfortable doing everything quite yet.
It was completely awesome to get the feeling of satisfaction after doing some aspects of the trail that I wouldn't have known how to do on friday. Plus, on the way back home my friend taught me how to bunny hop and it took me all of 3 tries to learn how to do it. Now to try it on some logs next week. I'd love to take pictures of the trail, but I think I'd ruin my camera if I even tried to take it on the ride because I fall so much
A few things I've noticed:
- As a roadie, I have to pedal in full circles. This doesn't matter in mtb riding if it's going to hit things while spinning. You spin and pedal to match what you're doing so if you're descending something technical, you have to watch out for things in the area that might hit your crank arms.
- As a roadie, I try getting as low as possible in a gearing to help me go fast. In Mtb weight balance, , and momentum have to be weighed equally to ensure that you clear an area well. I wasn't shifting very much, and I found myself doing wheelies while trying to climb up rock formations, so my gearing should have been lower and my weight should have been more evenly distributed.
-I still don't know how my seat height should be set up (help?).
Now to the questions!
1) I just had my brakes adjusted and the front brake is rubbing again. I know how to adjust regular brakes but I'm not sure how to adjust the mechanical disk brakes that I have. Can anyone tell me how? It seems a little annoying to have to pay 5 bucks everytime I get it adjusted. It's annoying because I could do it myself if I read something for it. Anyone have any steps to adjust the pads? Thanks!
2) My front wheel is going a little out of true. How do I true it by flipping my bike without a truing stand? I have a spoke wrench.
Thanks for all your help!
I'm really loving this! Now if there were only more hours in the day so I could fit in all my road and mountain rides!

The other thing I plan to do is shorten my chain and adjust fd limit to use the big ring as a bashguard. Lets see if it works out.
Anyone know how to explain the adjustment to the mechanical disc brake calipers? I can't stand the sound of it rubbing all the time.
Helping me true the wheels would be super nice too

1) This site will be able to explain this better than I can so heres a link
2) What I do is I use a white pencil crayon (cause my rims are black). I rest it against my fork and slowly bring it in until it touches the rim and makes a mark...adjust nipples accordingly and repeat. Don't forget to do both sides. It's pretty ghetto and not the greatest way to do that but if you don't have access to a truing stand it'll have to do
As for the whole "I still don't know how my seat height should be set up" it all depends on what your riding. For instance lift service riding I put it almost all the way down. Jumping all the way down. Trail riding it depends on the trail. A tame one I'll keep it almost at roadie high. If it gets more aggressive I bring it down a couple inches.
EDIT: Oh and I'm glad to hear your having a good time in the dirt

I don't know why I didn't think of looking at the park tool site haha. Thanks a lot!
I'm actually in the dirt a little too much, I'd rather be on my bike than eating the trail. You gotta learn some way
I'll try lowering my seat for the more technical stuff. I think it'll give me more clearance for bunny hops.
