What should I ask to sell a 2002 women' specialized rockhopper?

I have a 2002 specialized rockhopper that is xs women's with a sparkly purple finish.
It has manitou shocks. It needs a major overhaul, perhaps new front chainrings, maybe new rear cog and stuff like that. I was thinking about fixing it up and selling it, but my main bike needs serious work which I can barely scrape the money for and I need to downsize my bike collection.
It was bought 2003 and not ridden very much until 2005. Even though I live in a mountain biker's paradise, life changed and most of my biking has been commuting and errand running so it was mostly ridden on road and last few years been an extra bike for visiting kids.
I have kept it in hope I would have the time to go trail riding, but have found my regular rides handle my dirt road, trails and basic single track on my commute routes just fine.
I might just give it away in the end, but wondering what a fair price for a fixer upper would be. Given the kind of downhill bikes I see, not sure this bike would have much value.

You did not mention what you paid for the bike... check Craig's list for other bikes abou the same vintage - it will give you a feel. If you can get $100 - 150 you are doing well.

Why don't you donate it and take the write-off? I would...

I cannot remember what I paid for it....it was either $1200 or I paid the old season last bike sale price off of $1200. To donate it would require having a car to take it somewhere, so am likely to put a free ad on craigslist or leave it at the end of the drive so all the mountain bikers can see it as they ride up my road to the trails and mysterious trick riding park that has popped up overnight.

I have an '03 Rockhopper that I completely rebuilt from the frame up and am getting ready to sell it. It is a very mechanically sound bike. I buy older bikes, rebuild them, and sell them. I will probably ask $250-275 for it because of it's condition in my relatively overpriced market. I would think that the above estimate of 100-150 is probably correct if it needs work. If you are in a biking community, as you say, you just might get it. There is bound to be plenty of backyard mechanics, such as myself, who would like to restore it. Although, the small size limits the audience for it. Good luck.
