I recently bought an older ti frame that I plan on building into a XC bike (for trail riding and fun, not racing). The bike has canti mounts but no provision for a rear disc. My new fork has provisions for a disc, so I was considering either:

A) running a front disc/rear linear pull setup

or

B) contacting the frame manufacturer (Titus) about having rear disc mounts welded on.

I'd probably rather go with option A because it will be a lot cheaper. Also, I'm not sure how critical it is to run rear discs. Opinions welcome!

Although I've built several bikes, my experience is old school -- this will the first "new" bike I've built in about 10 years. I'd like to put together something that is solid and capable and that will last me as long as my last bike did.

I believe you can buy adapters to mount 0nto the frame, allowing disc brake support. But your right, option A is probably the better for your case.

hey man, don't worry about getting rear disc mounts on the back, remember you do the majority of your stopping with front brake anyways. I have an older HT and i just upgraded the front end a year and a half ago or so and put disc on the front, i love it. I only have 160mm rotors on the front and the stopping power imo is much better in all conditions than the v-brake i had on before. Good luck!

Thanks -- seems like a front disc is in my future Say, DrGonzo, I was looking at the Avid mechanicals and noticed that they did come in three sizes, and the price difference between them was minimal. Any reason not to go with the 170 or 180mm disc?
