1995 Specialized Stumpjumper

I'll be looking at a 1995 Stumpjumper. I'm going to use the bike as a year-around damp & snowy roads and on trails do-everything bike.

https://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/B...mper&Type=bike

It sounds well used: "The frame is scratched up a bit, but i's fast, handles well, and is ready to ride."

I'll install a rigid fork, new handlebars and maybe new shifters.

The owner is asking $375. If the bike has dents or cracks, I'll walk. But if it's undamaged but scratched up, what should I pay?

If that is the asking price, I think you should just pass on it. Plenty of other bikes out there.

I wouldn't pay more than $150 for a mint one.

Agreed, I picked a '91 up for $75. I don't see them that cheap very often, but $375 is absurd.

I'm hoping to trade the frame/fork for a smaller one...

Maybe $375 for a much newer stumpjumper. I can't think of much of anything as far as well used bikes go from the 90s that I'd pay $375 for. Plenty of quality 90s MTBs can generally be found for ~$100 or less, many in good condition.

Around here I'd go $100 for a Rockhopper, $200 for a Stumpjumper in GOOD condition. I doubt this one's on good condition if it's all scratched up.

EDIT: Actually if I lost my Mongoose today and the Stumpy is a steel one in my size I'd probably pay $300 or so for it. Tange Prestige gets me all hot and bothered and I might not want to wait around for another frame made out of the stuff to come along.

I may have found an alternate '90 MTB made of Tange Prestige. ...In better condition and for $60.

Well now I must ask. What's awesome about Tange Prestige tubing vs. other cro-mo tubing?

It's just Tange's high end tubing back in the day. On average, I've liked the frames I've had made out of it just a bit better than the frames I've had made out of True Temper's high-end offerings (Trek 990, KHS Montana Comp, etc).

By the mid 90s Tange had some even lighter steel tubing for XC use. Wall thickness was really getting down there so probably not so good for big riders hitting big jumps.

This stuff is pretty sweet:

I'll have to pick one up if I ever see a cheap on in my size. I do like steel.

You guys who like Tange mountain bike frames might like this frame that I'm going to be putting up FSOT soon. I don't know how this tubing stacks up with Tange Prestige, but the frame so cool! If it wasn't too small, I'd keep it forever:

Prestige is a little lighter, but Tange MTB OS is still no slouch in the nice ride department.
Tube weights if you're curious.
