Some Cool History...
I really like the older carbon RaceFace Next LP crank on my Rocky Mountain... it is stiff and light and despite seeing tons of abuse has held up beautifully and I'd never part with it.
My neighbour has a guy living upstairs in a suite and has been telling me for quite a long time that he is also a "bike guy" and we finally hooked up and got to talk for what was most of the evening.
He has a prototype Rocky Mountain XS2 built with a carbon fibre monocoque that was fitted with a pair of my favourite cranks in mint condition which in itself is pretty damn cool... it got ten times cooler when he said he designed the carbon monocoque and was the designer of the Next SL crank.
He has worked with Trek, Rocky Mountain, GT, Specialized ,RaceFace and my partner in the past when they teamed up to fit our '84 Olympic team with carbon fibre wheels (with specially built Arvon hubs) and some of the earliest aero helmets which were designed in joint with local experts in aerodynamics.
It was quite a lesson in history and development of composites in the cycling industry going back more than 25 years... he believes that he was one of the first to design and develop the technology to build carbon monocoque frames when other folks were still gluing bikes together.
Now he is building parts for F1 cars but wants to come back to cycling which was his first love and says he has a bunch of cool prototypes for me to look over.
Also said that John Tomac was a great guy to go riding with.
