2003 Gary Fisher Sugar 4+
Anybody here have any experience with them? I'm looking at one this weekend.
Might pick it up until I can afford to put together a custom built Turner 5 Spot.

(just kidding)
They're pretty light (sub-30lb) for an old bike.
They can be built down to 27lbs relatively inexpensively.
I was just wondering what to look for when I inspect it besides the usual stuff (cracks, etc...).
I was wondering if there were any particular problem areas with the Shugs.

Someone here in Atlanta has a 2003 Sugar posted for like $400. I thought that was probably a decent deal, if the suspension was in good shape. If it's that old, make sure you get a good deal on it.

Yeah you have to really get it in your head that you're looking at a bike that's 8 maybe even 9 years old, seeing as 2003 bikes come out late 2002.

It seems to be clean and from an original owner. If it's equipped as OEM, all it'll need will be
a cockpit & replaceables (brake pads, tires, tubes, etc...). Then, I'll use it to satisfy my need
to get some trail time in (again) until I can afford a custom full squisher.
If it goes through, of course, I'll post pics.

Even today, they have respectable numbers for a trail bike. I'd try my best to "not" upgrade
it beyond it's value, but hey, it's always great to have a back-up MTB anyway.

I got the Fish for $300.
I told the seller (nice guy) I only needed the bike and
he ended up throwing everything else in the deal anyway.
So, I got my summer rig (until I can eventually afford a custom build).
I think it's a pretty good deal. I'm liking the Fox Float Shock and
I can live with the LX group. I have a 2009 Gary Figher Opie
with a cracked seat tube that I can cannibalize for parts if needed
(but from the looks of it, this bike is in better condition than my'09).
Bar ends, pedals, seat bag, water bottle, pump...all coming right off.
Going on: My Shimano M-737 SPD's.
Immediate upgrades:
ODI Rogue grips, Kenda Nevegals, tubes, WTB Saddle, Easton EA70 Bar,
Kool Stop brakes pads and possibly a Thompson stem (if it can be
transferred to my next bike) & dropper seat post.
[Going to drop it off at my LBS so they can service the fork/shock and give it a once over.]
2003 Gary Fisher Sugar 4+ (19")
- Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedals
- Blackburn mtn. air pump,
- water bottle cage
- bar ends
- seat bag
- tire irons
Highlights:
Frame Platinum Series ZR9000 double-butted aluminum
Fork Manitou Black Comp 100mm
Rear Shock Fox Float
Deore LX Group
G1 Geometry

She's treating me well.
My '09 Gary Fisher Opie was a 33lb hardtail.
It was fun to climb with, but there's so much more I can do with 4" of full squish.

EH, sorry too late... the sugars suffered poorly aligned rear triangles and are super flexy rear triangle/linkage. I hope you're not a heavy rider. They are fun to ride but don't be dropping in too much

So long as she carries me across some nice single track
(what it was designed for), I think I'll be alright.
I'll save the aggressive stuff for the Turner 5 Spot I'll be building.

Add to that they are known to crack at the seatube pivot. My wife has a sugar 2 that weighs in a 25lbs and she finds the steering a little quick , but I like the fast steering.
