So I have a dumb question about new mtb shoes

I bought some Mavic shoes off Chainlove and I was really excited about them. Well when they came, one shoe had the 2-hole metal insert to mount cleats and one of them didn't. The box didn't have any other hardware in it either. I thought, oh crap, this is defective and I returned it.

But I was looking at some cleats online and saw that replacement kits came with new mounting hardware. So do all new shoes come with the metal inserts already inside them? Or am I an idiot and that part comes with the cleats?

Some shoes come with the nut plates installed and some don't. If only one shoe had the nutplate installed and the other did not, I'd say one was missing.

Could you pull out the insoles and see the mounting spot for the nutplates inside the shoe?

My Shimanos came with plates and optional plates. I think you did right to return them. Mavic shoes should be complete with any option included.
