What kind of pedal?
 

Well im looking for some pedals but i am not srue of what type i would like. I use the same bike for trails as i do for commuting. I would go for clipless if it wasnt for the fact you need the shoes and i cant get myself to wear shoes for going to starbucks and wear them around school. Would i benifit from toe clips or what? ANy ideas?

Just get a nice set of Platforms..... They're ncie for trails and riding around... ive been doing it for 2 years now, never had any problems

get some Shimano M324 's they are for commuters who do trails, look on google

But good platforms will work very well too.

platforms will work, but you can find pretty casual looking shoes, I know lake makes some decent ones, there are even sandals that have cleats on em :D

well i think im going to order Crank Brothers Candy SL. Ive heard super things about egg beater (see my other post somewhere ont his forum) but i hear you can't ride them unclipped because of hte tiny contact area, so candy SL i think is my better buy.

Plus i just like the idea even if i am clipped in, to have something to put my foot on

dude, you should really look into the crank bro mallets they're what I'm getting :-D A platform, and you can clip it :-D

Yeah, the Candy SL's are still very small platform and aren't going to be comfortable to ride unclipped... you want something like the Mallet C or Mallet M. They have a larger platform that you can ride unclipped. :)

I currently have seven bikes- and counting, and use Power Grips on six. After using power grips in the mountains (for cranking power) and in traffic for quick bail out to prevent the embarassment and pain of zero-g falls ;-). I don't plan to return to clipless or platforms. The remaining bike- a big hybrid for commuting in snow and ice does have a mega platform appropriately called "Big Masher" for pedaling with big boots. I described this in a 2002 post.

"I use Big Masher from Nashbar on two mountain bikes and two hybrids. Each pedal has 26 sharp points which can dig into either Skechers Sport shoes (when survival-commuting in Boston) or Performance shoes designed for platform pedals when I ride at Crested Butte. I would recommend the Big Masher to any and all riders- except possibly boardwalk riders with bare feet ;-)

After trying several other pedals (clipless, brainless etc.) I routinely change the pedals on any bike I ride to Mashers. Lots of contact area to crank into (~10.5 sq. inches each pedal), quick bail-outs, spectacular endos ;-) and a tremendous feeling of security whether standing or shifting your weight vector around- plus the price is right. Since I ride horses, I can favorably compare these spiked platforms to the secure stirrups into which I drive my weight through my heels.

Whoa! I just found out that Nashbar seems to have discontinued this unique product! Well, I'll contact Nashbar. In the interim, you can at least see what the Masher looks like- or used to look like ;-(

I just got my new Crank Brother Candy C in white and they are amazing. Until now I was using cheap Nashbar clipless pedals. I thought they were fine and was planing on keeping them until I saw the Candys on sale for 50 bucks. These things are amazingly easy to clip in and out of. I now realize how much my Nashbars sucked next to these. I ride in NYC and it's good to know that I will be able to easily unclip if I have to. An added bonus to these pedals is that the cleats don't scrape the gound when I walk in my Sidi Rampas.
