Will "road bike" cranks work on a mtn bike?

Bank error in my..........no. Never mind that.

I have some money, and I was thinking about upgrading the cranks on my SS. I currently have some RaceFace "Next" cranks that have aluminum shrouding some carbon, but they are on a tapered BB.

I was thinking of converting over to the Mega Exo bottom bracket, thinking that would save me a little weight.

A LOT of the cranks I see on a certain auction website are stating that they are "road bike" cranks. I know I currently ride with 180 mm cranks on my geared bike, and most of the "road bike" cranks I see are 170, 172.5 and 175 mm. Is that the difference? Is that a BIG difference?

Yea or nay?

Should I give the money back to the bank, or take the crew out to dinner?

Thanks!

Is there something simple or obvious that I am missing? Or is this something that we just don't know?

My crew wants my bicycle stable to be the gnar, so getting an epic set of cranks is paramount.

:D

I passed over this thread because I figured someone more knowledgable would come in with a definite answer. As far as crank arm length, I know that's just a matter of personal preference. I've seen mountain bikes with crank arms as short as 165mm (for a young-teenaged kid to ride an adult bike as he grew into it) & as long as 180mm like your current setup. I believe mine are 175 & they's perfect for my riding.

I think the main concern with road bike cranksets should be durability. If you're just riding fire roads & MUPs, I wouldn't worry, but if you're riding singletrack I personally would trust roadie cranks to withstand the abuse. Someone more educated could come in & correct me, but given the nature of roadie bikes (weight>strength), I'm pretty confident in my answer.

Appreciate the insight about the crank length.

(And getting the joke.)

I don't think you would be happy with the gearing options that you would have with road cranks.

I assume a triple would work, they are 10sp but I think they work with a 9sp chain.

Even though 5mm doesn't seem like much it seems it is quite noticeable. 175-180 wouldn't be too bad but going down to 170 would be a huge difference.
I think the above is made in 180 but harder to find.

But if you want to go really gnar!!!

On one of mine I went with red and gold! I think those red chain rings are CRAZY.

It now has a fox fork (white) and a red KCNC stem, Red CK headset and red seat post clamp.

That thing looks pretty damn nice! The gold color of the frame and cranks seem to be spot on! I *REALLY* try to be a "Function over Form" guy, but I have to admit that I love the looks of my Soul Icon, and I put some white SPD pedals on it (to play off the white "Soul" and "Icon" graphics), and I cannot help but smile a bit when I look at it.

Seems like I missed yours is a SS.

Well I did get a little carried away when I found the limited edition Magura HS-33's, with gold levers and brake boosters, and red wear adjuster knobs.
And the red titanium Wellgo pedals have gold titanium axles, go figure.

Gold dual crown forks are the greatest thing ever. As for color schemes in general, Cherry Red Metallic & Pearl White are unbeatable on just about any bicycle (& some cars) IMO.

Gnar, rawk, etc. I'm back to a forum where they speak............ENGLISH!
