Examples of great refuel foods/snacks during ride

First, I want to say that I hope there is no other question like this so it doesnt piss anybody off that i'm asking. I couldn't find any or maybe not what I was looking for.

Now to the question.

I'm looking for recommendations of foods/snacks to eat during rides. I've asked around and I always get general answers like, eat snacks with carbs and proteins. Hte one specific example I always get is to carry a banana, but what if I don't like bananas? Or hwta if it's too hot and it becomes a mess to carry one? (like it happened to me one time, big stinky mess). Another snack I've heard is a granola bar, but two times I was riding and people would say that granola bars are not good beacuse they take too long to absorb and one time they proceeded to give me an Clif energy bar (I like it but I got tired of it). I look forward to your responses.

Oh and I hate the gels, they make me noseous.

If you like the taste of cardboard, Powerbars FTW!

I like Clif bars - - not as sawdusty-tasting as many, especially the peanut butter variants. If it's a long and/or grueling and/or hot ride, a Clif-Shot or two is not a bad thing to have along as well to help stave off bonking. Just keep trying different flavors until you find one that's at least not disagreeable and be sure to chase them with enough water to wash it down (and rinse your palate if it still bugs you).

. . . although there's certainly something to be said for a good IPA and a homemade hoagie too.

Paydays.

You racing? Or going on a ride where you don't mind stopping for a few and eating something that won't be processed super quick, but will actually taste good?

I'm a type 2 diabetic, so it is important that I bring snacks. I like Lance peanut butter crackers for a quick shot of carbs. They store well even on hot days. They are a little dry, but a gulp of water solves that.

Costco carries a variety of good energy bars like Clifs, LUNA (my favorites) and Mrs. May's TRIO snack. The TRIO snack is a tasty blend of nuts, fruits and honey. The Payday is a good non sticky snack as well. I've never had the patience to take cut up pieces of fruit, but I guess I should.

Where I ride a Starbucks kind of coffee shop is never more than a couple miles away. On longer rides I like to hit one and get a coffee with a scone or Lemon bread. Spend @20 minutes there frightening the locals with my outfit and then head back to the dusty trails.

Good riding to you.

The best post ride refuel is of course Chicken Nachos with Fat Tire Beer.

Fig Newtons.

Good call!
You are aware that Monday was 'National Fig Newton Day'?

Leebo 01-18-12 02:58 PM

Fig newtons and dried apricots.

:thumb:No foolin', this is what I took with me last time I went to the trails (with a bag of chocolate/nut trail mix in place of the apple pie). Though I'll admit I don't regularly drink Dale's, still a little too bitter for my developing taste buds.

Gotta watch the offerings at those desert Costcos .

^^A truly natural and magical seasoning!

Things like Peanut-Butter crackers and Nutri-grain bars sit well and don't take too long to get your energy back up, with the latter being quicker to get you going.

Good ideas, these.

And there are lots of energy bars out there that don't taste like cardboard. Just sample a few.

Someone else said Payday bars; I agree. Also, oatmeal creme sandwich cookies are good, and (if it's not too hot out) Rice Krispy treats give you a quick little shot.

A local ride, called the Chilly Challenge, every Jan. 1, is a 2+ hour group roll around town, during which we watch the local Polar Bears dip in the river. After-ride, we have a chili buffet/cook-off. Most years, it's pretty blustery. I've been on this ride a few times (work sometimes interferes), and oatmeal cremes got me through two of them.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I guess I wasn't to far from what you guys are saying, so I'l try your snacks to change it up a bit. I'm still a newbie, so I'm trying to understand how to prepare and take care of myself on the trails. After our rides (I'm from Puerto Rico and where we ride is always hot) we head to the nearest shack and get a couple of beers and empanadas for a quick recoup. Maybe not the best idea after a fat burning activity.

The city of Henderson, NV is sponsoring a "Chocolate Chase" in Feb. It is a roadie 50 miler, but I feel that in the name of research for energy recovery that I should ATTEND the event and provide you all with a report!

When I went to the website to sign up, there were nothing but females on the ride list. I am so embarrassed........

Most guys would probably be pretty happy about that prospect. I say do it.

I will make the ride. I am happily married, but I love being a pest!

he just doesn't want to get skooled by that many women all at once ;).

Nutri-Grain type bars are OK, they're like a big Fig Newton. I get good results with classic PowerBars too, but they're so temperature-sensitive... hard as a rock in the cold, hopelessly limp when it's hot.
