I want to build a crapper for running around on.
The bloke around the corner gave me this old GF and I'm hoping you fine people could let me know it's year.
I had a look around on the net and am failing. I'm thinking 1996. Would you call this colour Emerald? (EDIT: just found an Emerald one and I'm very wrong, maybe 1997 Fern Green)

Does that say 'Aquila' on the top tube? My guess is a 1998 Gary Fisher Aquila.

Sorry I missed this question. Weight ummmm, no idea.
My only gauge is as follows:
With the stuck seat post in....heavy
With the chopped up / split seat post out....not so bad.

My guess is that this Kermit Starbucks Starship is going to be pretty heavy once completed. Everything except the cranks, BB, grips and brake levers have been donated / recycled. My friends have only donated their old junk so hence...weighty weighty.

As you know I'm building this jalopy and need to keep the cost as low as possible. I was going to buy new cranks but I'm having issues with price and availability.

Anyway, I've been given a set of road cranks and I plan to run a single chain ring, but the BB I was given is for a 68mm BB shell and mine is a 73mm.
Have any of you guys put a road crank successfully on an MTB and / or what spindle width do you suggest I use? I was thinking about a 118mm spindle.
The net says the bike's original set up for a triple was a 113mm spindle. I read somewhere that the width difference between an MTB and raod crank is 20mm. Correct? This math is doing my head in.

WOW!!!!!!! So sweet...that was the bike that got me started on singletrack. I was sold on the white tires, which turned to more of a clay red in no time.

Yeah don't have the tyres, but my LBS has a similar set in their shop. The frame had a fair amount of surface rust but I've sanded that back and given those bits a spray. Unfortuanetly the paint dosen't match at all.
Weather's crappy right now so the build has halted...
Wheels, Frame (before I got to it with the can), and Forks....

The wheels of progress have fallen off...
My project has been put on hold for the last two weeks waiting for a freekin BB and front skewer. The Shimano distributor is having a problem (#&%").
It is currently close to this stage pictured, although the calipers have been swapped to black and one of the bottle cages has gone.
Currently the build has set me back $127, and the estimated total cost maybe about $180, which includes a BB, front skewer, and a chain guide if need be.

I've borrowed some pedals until some arrive from my brother. Total cost completed $155.17. I'm a happy chappy.

Now to test it.

I like that a lot, the geometry is great. I would be careful not to hit that front wheel too hard though, that type of lacing doesnt look strong enough to me for mtbing. A nice responsive ride i'll bet?

Yeah the front wheel feels like it's as light as paper so I'm a little concerned, but I'm hoping that because I'm a skinny bugger, it'll be ok.

Very responsive and fits me well. I didn't get a chance to go up into the mountains today as it was pissing down rain on and off, plus I was working between finishing the build today. I can say though that it pulls funtastic monos.

Very nice. Question for you...with the single ring up front, however many gears you have on the back, and no chain guide, you dropping the chain at all or have you been alright?

I suspect I will need a chain guide. I tried an old derailleur but I couldn't get it set right.
I'm going to grind the teeth off the spare outer ring. Then I'll use it as a cheap bash guard. I'll leave the inner ring for the time being to catch the chain if it skips off.
I'm running 1 x 9 (32 x 12 - 23) For the time being I haven't used from 19 - 23 and probably rarely will. Other solution is to adjust the rear deraileur so it's a 1 x 6.

So far the chain hasn't come off...luck only.

That is very similar to a steel that i just finished building a few weeks ago, the geometry and even the colour. Uncanny lol

Not bad for a bike that was given to you.

As long as you're not a clyde and bash into trail obstacles, the front wheel should be fine. I'm still using the original radially laced front wheel on my old Stumpy HT going on 14 years. No issues except it needing an occasional truing and even then it's not out by much.

Get a cheap outer bash and NGear to keep the chain on the crankset.

Sorry I missed this question because I'm on holidays in Australia right now. The stand was a no name one that the local bike shop was throwing away so unfortunately I have no idea what brand it is. All I can tell you is that it's steel and heavy.
