Hello,
I'm looking to see if there are any Nishiki fans here. Most people call Nishiki a "no name brand" bike, but the one I had when I was younger was really nice. It was a Custom Nishiki Pinnacle (not sure what year) that I picked up 2nd hand from a guy that accidentally ran over my crappy Wal-Mart bike.
So what is the word on the street about Nishiki riders? I don't mind being an outsider that sticks to his brand .. Maybe it was a 90's thing and now they have gone to crap...
I hate the style of most of the new bikes now days.. does anyone agree? You folks like the older stuff better, or is the technology of the new stuff kick the older bikes out of the water?
This is more of a forum community related question, I'm not asking about what I should buy...

I just picked up an old one from our ReCyclery. It will be my mtn bike I use for adventure cycling that I can take on a bus to trails farther away. It looks like crap so it won't get stolen.

I used to lust over these a LOT!



I haven't seen any Nishiki riders in a while, so can't comment on how they're viewed.
About to fix up an '80s Nishiki road bike, though.

Nishiki was another good brand in the 80s and 90s. Somewhere the name got sucked up into the corporate Name swapping game. I remember getting a Norco Big Foot in the mid 90s and the manual was NORCO-NISHIKI-FIORI. Kind of a weird combo of names. The bike you describe was probably as good as any at that its price point.

You will find a mix of people here. I still have an old HT but love my CF DS All Mountain,XC, DH bike with Bose sound system. Sorry got carried away there. I ride my HT for trips to the bank and the post office, getting some coffee. For bouncing around the rocks I like the suspension and lighter frame. I need all the help I can get. There is a Classic and Vintage thread on Bike Forums as well as Mountain Bikes. You should enjoy the banter on both threads.

Welcome aboard here. The main issue to face is, are you enjoying riding what you have? Mountain biking and riding in general is the rush of the wind and adrenalin. Have a blast and post some pictures of your bike.

I don't but that's cool. That's what's fun about mountain biking: there is enough variety out there to float anyone's boat.


For the record, my first 'real' bike shop bicycle was a Nishiki Olympic road bike, ca. 1978 or so. It was a wonderful commuter and would have given me many car-free years probably if it hadn't gotten stolen within a month of owning it.

Sniff, ^^^, sniff, gosh d, that is a touching heart break story. Sniff, sad to hear it. Seriously, I hate thieves, bike thieves are the lowest scum. You need a set of skinny tires for making that run to CdA'L.

Mee too, although they were soon supplanted by the elevated CS Haros due to my bmx background and fascination with neon colors.

I fought furious battles with chainsuck at the time, and these seemed to me to be just what the doctor ordered.

....just picked up an entry level new Nishiki Wasatch for my wife. It is a limited production model exclusively produced for Dick's Sporting Goods. Not a bad full suspension package for only $499. It weighs in at 36 pounds. It will never win any races but is a nice starter piece.

Did someone say Nishiki? Yeah I've been known to show up at a trail with a Nishiki. Dig this pair of Ariels! The bike on the top is my gravel MUP rider. The bike on the bottom I've taken to trails now and then. That's an original Scott "Clark Kent" shock on that bike. I"ve got a 92 cascade that I'm building up right now.
Yeah, I like Nishiki's. Wish they'd market their higher end bikes in the US, not just the entry level like they do at Dicks right now.
