Should I Pull the Trigger?

Last mountain bike I had was a Schwinn when they made pretty good bikes. Well I have been itching to get back into the sport again now that I have the time. A guy I work with has a Trek Fuel EX 8 he is selling for $1500. It is either an 09 or 10 model and in good shape. It is mostly white in color if that helps distinguish the year. I am not doing anything crazy, mostly fire roads and a few technical trails

I also have the opportunity to get a 2009 hard tail elite 9.9 ssl for $1800. Or should I just go with a newer 4900 to get back in the saddle?

if the fuel fits you, i would get it. i would offer him $1000 for it. for $1700 you can get a brand new fuel ex 5, which you know for sure would fit you. the only difference is components. frame is the same.

if you are on mostly fire roads, a hard tail should suffice, for $1500 you can get a pretty bad ass hardtail.

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm thinking of getting a new XCaliber for a HT or the EX 5. If the frames are the same on the EX bikes then I would enjoy upgrading components. I like working on stuff. Plus I can get the Trek credit card and pay over 6 months I think which is extra incentive to go new
