Tell me about this GT: Deore XT, Mavic 230 SPB -
I bought these two bikes at a yard sale for $60. The blue one is the one im posting about. It's a blue anodized GT frame with nice Shimano Deore XT components, and a Mavic 230 S P B wheelset w/ 8 speed cassette. I have removed the crusty saddle, random bike lock, rusty chain, and the ugly bar stem combo. The frame actually cleaned up really well, but it might need a new fork. Can anyone tell me what model it is? Better pictures upon request.

Those are excellent buys for the $60. That chain needs replaced, some oil might make it tolerable, but a new chain would be good. I re entered mountain biking about 4 years ago on a similar kind of bike. I had the same rims. They were pretty durable. Just keep em straight. It got me in better shape than I had been in for 10 years. Ride that blue bike and enjoy the view.

The XT drrive train on that GT is worth quite a bit. Don't think just because it's 8 speed it's not valuable. Vintage restorers pay big bucks for that set up.

Good to hear. I took some more pictures to see if you guys can get the exact year and model. If you can, then i will try to find the frame decals online. Everything is in nice condition: Some surface rust on the components, A few minor scratches, & No dents. Replacing the chain is at the top of the list, Then the fork, bars, pedals, & tires come later. How much would you say this is worth all built up? I plan on keeping it, but i want to know how much money is under my legs. I usually road cycle so this will be a great new project. Can't wait to get into the mountains.

Try pumping some air into that fork, it's either a Mag 21 or 10 depending if there are rebound knobs up top. There should be a dust cap in which you can put a standard ball needle. Doesn't take much air, but it's worth seeing if it'll even seal. That thing is dangerous all flat like that, I'm pretty sure the tire will scrape.
Cool bike. That's the last year of XT before V-Brakes.
EDIT: just clicked on one of your linked pics, that's a MAG-21. It might be one of the specialized branded ones, but I'm 99% sure the internals are the same.

Thanks for the 94 zaskar confirmation. It's cleaning up really well, i just disassembled the cassette and cleaned it all up. I'm just going to buy a new fork since the exterior is so rough and i tried to rebuild it but nothing happened. Any suggestions on a new fork around $60?

Oh wow, that is a gorgeous color.
For $60, you'll almost certainly want to go rigid, unless you find a smoking deal on Craigslist.

I have one of those frames in my basement. Custom modded for better cantilever performance but you have to be willing to chop your post.

Looks a lot like an origin 8 to me. Still a gorgeous bike man, although I would not have opted for the blue grips.

So i took it to some trails today, and everything works great. Quick shifting uphill and just enough suspension. We even took it off some small drops and jumps. Although I'm still pretty clueless on the value of this bike. I'm not a mountain biker, i'm a cyclist and i happen to know nothing of it's price. Maybe if i know what it's worth i can treat it better.

Sadly, the market's so depressed for old mountain bikes, you'd be lucky to get $250 for it. Just enjoy it and ride it like you stole it.
If you ever do go to sell it, find the corresponding LX or XT rapidfires of the era, the shifters you have now stick out like a sore thumb. I'm sure they function great, but aesthetics wise... notsomuch.
