Barracuda MTB purchase?

So I'm meeting a guy tomorrow to buy a 1995 Barracuda Dos Equis XX Team in good condition for $125. It's just my size and it's got all original components. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on this bike or purchase in general. It seems to me like a good deal but I don't know much of this brand. I would appreciate any opinions or insight!

That's from a time when Barracuda were a good brand. If it fits and you are happy with the price, then go for it.

For the spec of the bike, it's hard to see from the side shown, but the forks look to be either Manitou 3 or 4, if these aren't working, anticipate replacement, as spares have been non-existant for years

Elastomers can still be bought for those forks, I don't know about seals though.

Looks like a pretty cool and very decent bike. Just know that the fork, as jimc101 mentioned, could be an issue. Depending on what you want out of the bike it's fine. If you plan to upgrade the fork in the future, know that you're going to have a lot of trouble finding a short travel fork these days. Seems like 100mm is about the shortest anyone makes anymore. Looks like that one is only 50mm? Using a longer travel fork might not be a problem at all depending on what geometry you want.

A few of the 'big' name fork manufacturers still offer 80mm forks or forks that can be lowered to 80mm.
SR-Suntour & RST still have 50mm & 60mm forks, they classify them as trekking forks.

Thanks guys, its good to expect something like this fork issue rather than it springing up on me and not knowing my real issue. After doing some more research on the bike, i am getting pretty excited about this catch. They seem to be something of a collectors item.

Buy that buy that buy that. Buy it and figure it out later. If its a team bike, it's worth much more than that. Hell, I'll pay you $125 plus shipping for it if it's too much of a headache. Now you can't lose.

Buy that.

Edit: ok not a team bike per se, but still serviceable and very unique. buy it.

Haha, thanks for the advice =). I found an entire website dedicated to the Barracuda name. http://www.barracudabicycles.com/ Quite a nice little story behind them. And even better, I'm from the same city the original creators came from, Grand Rapids, MI. If anyone cares, I can snap some better pictures tomorrow once I get the bike and post them.

All the Ski Resorts in Colorado had Barracuda's for rental bikes in the 90's. Great bike and a decent team way back when. Good bike and a very reasonable price.

^^

It's actually my son's. It was a frame I got free from an LBS a few years ago and I built it up for XC. Then he used it as a commuter; and, recently, he decided to reinvent it as a stone-basic coaster-brake klunker.

^^ Haha - - I do have a Timbuk2 . . . but no skinny jeans.

The process of his project, though, inspired me on what I'm going to do with my old Schiwnn cruiser frame: kick-back, two-speed coaster brake hub. Yee-haw.

Well I picked it up yesterday and it's fantastic! Needs a couple small adjustments but no biggie. Not bad for $125! Enjoy the pics =)

Score!

I LOVE my old school team DE Barracuda. At one point while living in Boulder, CO in the 90's, my Baraccuda was my car. Good times!
I still have it, would never sell it, would cry if it got stolen...great bike!
