construction and functional merits of PD-M980 pedals over PD-M780 pedals

I currently have PD-M780 pedals on my flat-bar road bike. I'm getting a new road bike and am thinking of getting PD-M980 pedals this time. However, I'd like to justify and convince myself that doing so is worth the approximately $65 price difference. Aside from the weight difference, is there any marked difference between them in terms of alloy composition, construction quality, function? I've Googled and have not found satisfactory answers on this. Is the additional $65 justified in terms of alloy composition, construction quality, function? Or is the price difference just snob appeal?

If your are getting a road bike, then there are road specific pedals and shoes available.

If you are sticking SPD type pedals on it, you won't have any XTR to match the M980's so as Ken, just look at the M520.
