Mavic mtn shoes - metal plate?
I just picked up a pair of Mavic Rush shoes. Cheaper version of the Fury. They came with two metal plates that appear to be intended to go between the cleat and the shoe. Anyone know the purpose? I'm using SPD pedals and cleats. I know some pedals that work better with such a metal plate, but I've never done so with SPDs. Any insight would be appreciated, since I can't seem to find any information from Mavic.

I think that's a spacer to make the cleat stick out more in case the shoe tread is too tall to get clipped in.
Edit: Actually, I don't think that's right. I got home and checked my shoes and instructions for my pedals. Turns out the spacer is plastic and came with the pedals, not the shoes. However, I did find a couple metal plates that I'm pretty sure came on the shoes, which is probably what you're talking about. I'm not sure what purpose they serve, if any.

Cool. Didn't think it may be because of issue with clearance. I was wondering if it were perhaps obligatory. Sounds like not so much.

I think they go on the outside of the shoe, to add some re-inforcement to the way the cleat attaches to the shoe. (At least, that's where I'm putting 'em. I don't see how they'd be useful on the inside of the shoe.)

How do the cleats attach to the shoe? My shimano cleats get put on the bottom of the shoe. Take out the insoles, put in the metal plate, screw bolts through cleat into plates from the bottom of the cleat. Yes. If in doubt, contact LBS or maybe Mavic web site. Or other clueless web lurkers.

Those cleat plates are very useful....don't toss them out! Clipless pedal engagement points often destroy the composite surface of MTB shoes. The metal plate is first a cleat interface shim...then a protective shield.
