mountain biking noob - knee pads

I've been mountain biking for 6 months now, originally just a road cyclist. I hit some pretty gnarly hills yesterday almost crashing several times. I'm really thinking about getting knee pads but I can't help but imagine they reduce the movement of my knees. learn me plz!

g form makes light pads that actually work when you fall. i unintentionally fully product tested them, and thankfully, they live up to their claims. they are light and you can wear them all day and not know they are there. i wouldn't do serious downhillling in them, but for regular riding they are perfect.

I use the 661 Rage knee pads. Fairly comfy once you get them positioned correctly on your leg.

I'm glad you asked the question and am looking at the options presented here. I am also looking for elbow pads. Any one have a good suggestions.

g form. same story as above.

if anyone asks about pads and they are not racing downhill or doing huge dirt jumping, i will say g form. i don't wear pads, i don't like them. there are only two times i want to wear them, so i like the g form stuff. and like i said, i fully product tested them, not wanting to, and i know for a fact they work.

The crowd favorite for knee pads by far are the 661 Kyle Strait pads.

I have the 661 XC EVO elbow pads. Thin, and have d3o padding. I don't really need super padding for my elbows, though, since if I'm riding something really gnarly where I need more padding, I'd be in body armor.

You definitely want just knee and not knee/shin? If you decide to go knee/shin combo, Dainese were by far the comfiest I tried. But I'd highly recommend trying them on, because some of them might fit better than others.

Discontinued, from what I was told, which is why I got the Rage pads.

I wouldn't say im doing serious downhilling but I'd like to be able to crash in loose rocks at 15 mph. I dont think that qualifies as serious but i dont know.

they will protect your knees if you crash on rocks at 15 mph. i crashed on rocks (not at 15 mph) and f*&cked up my finger (it almost bends all the way now, months later) and got cut pretty good, but my knees and elbows remained unharmed.

Raceface zero lw for shin/knee and elbo/forearm. They are not full length shin but provide good protection. They are light, breathable and comfortable on long rides!
