Are you an uphiller or a downhiller?

Uphillers live for a good climb, attack it with relish, the steeper and longer the better, and then they rest while coasting down the other side as a well-earned reward.

Downhillers tolerate the uphills and live for the thrill of vigorously attacking the downhill. It's all about attack position and speed. Uphills are merely the price to be paid.

I don't mind a good climb, but downhill is where it's at - especially one with flow.

Videos usually flatten. Yours gives a good sense of the steepness, especially towards the end.

Are you trying to tell me raw footage is boring? I already knew that it isn't to everyone's taste. That's why they invented mute buttons and mp3 files

Not really . . . I'm saying that even finished climbing footage with cool wipes and dissolves and an Anberlin or Wolf Mother soundtrack would still be boring .

I have heard that climbing is boring. However, since I started posting road and mtb sufferfest videos in February of last year, I have discovered that plenty of people actually enjoy climb footage. The types of cyclists who like watching climbs are usually roadies, with a few mountain bikers here and there. Also, the roadies who enjoy climbing vids also enjoy suffering up hills as much as I do. After all, my custom user title is "Loves to suffer"

I am up to 166 subscribers, which isn't bad for a YouTube channel that's almost all cycling-related videos. I'm catering to a small segment of the population by posting only cycling videos.

I look at it like my IRA. The pain and suffering of feeding it allows me the privilege of screaming joyfully on the downhills. Another way of looking at it, its them stinking downhills that have sidelined me and cost me some bucks. Maybe I need to find a speed govenur for my Fat tires.

If I could skip the uphills, I would. I also wouldn't care if there was a fire road to the top because as boring as it would be, it would get me up there faster. And it's boring with technical stuff too, so no loss. If I lived somewhere decent, had money for tickets, and didn't suck (emphasis on that last part), I'd just ride lift-serviced and be done with it.

I might be sick but I truly love both.

I love the pain of long steep grinders and demoralizing people as they crack and I go by but nothing beats the thrill of a super fast flowing downhill with some small air. I have not tried a true downhill course with big air and fear I might die if I ever did.

Hear is a video of me climbing some hills at the Iceman Race in Northern Michigan. It is a 30 mile point to point race with some good climbs at the end.

If the weather and views are nice, I find pushing my bike to the top of a long downhill to be a mildly pleasant experience.

Got a version of that with no music and 100% original audio? Nothing shows the suffering more than raw footage .

Some people like to look at pictures of cyclists racing where you can see the pain in their face. I like to watch video where you can hear the effort and suffering involved in the climb.

here is the raw version of just Anita's Hill. It is the first Hill in the video and is crazy steep with a nix mix of sand. Sorry about the loud shifting. The unit had the mic and it was put in the downtube bottle holder.

Those are the kinds of hills I love. Great strength training for road climbs, since I swing both ways (road and mtb).

The loud shifting didn't bother me at all, because I like to hear the shifting sounds too. It's another indicator of the steepness of a climb.

I never did make it up to Auburn over the weekend to redo that climb I posted video of earlier in this thread, so I'll have to see if I can make it up there in a few days .

I thought I might as well put a road climb as well.

I am the event coordinator for a hill challenge ride called the Michigan Mountain Mayhem and I made this video of a hill I call The Super Hill. It is a paved walking path up the side of a ski resort and the section on the video runs from 20%- 29% grade per my Garmin 800. This hill is an optional climb because it is to steep for most and can be dangerous if you have to dismount. The video does not do it justice, I walked down it the day before the event with a leaf blower to blow off debris and make it as safe as possible. I set the leaf blower down to rest and it slide 20ft down the path until it caught on the side.

I honestly thought we'd be skewed way more towards the downhill. More of us like uphilling than I had expected. We might have to run shuttles in reverse to take people back to the bottom again.

Uphill is only to build strength to go downhill faster and longer up the next blasted hill. I swear at hills and consider them an evil obstacle to my peace of mind. There's a short one next to my house that I literally do not have enough weight on the pedals to climb - have to hang on the drops and pull up to push my feet down. If it doesn't fold my frame next year I will best it.

edit: as usual situational awareness is uphill for me. Just realized this is a MB forum, not the 41. Oooops. Still, flying downhill has always been where it's at. I grew up on dirt roads, gravel pits, and winter sledding. Downhill was a blast even then.
