a) My two best mates started riding seriously in like 2004 August and I was stuck with a Walmart bike; I got left out of the trips and stuff. :S
b) It's in my blood, maybe? Dunno, but my cousin, between the ages of 16 and 20 was in a cycling club and rode loads. Once when I visited him in Hungary, he lent me one of his bikes and took me for an XC trip in the mountains. I loved it! Too bad I didn't have money for an entry level bike and my parents wouldn't pay.
c) 'Cause I felt like it.

1) Road riding is boring
2) I was huge and wanted a way out, something fun and different, so a guy I worked with told me stories of his rides, and it sounded great.
3) I've always been a risk-taker, and this sounded much more dangerous than being in a gym or running.

Always rode 20 inch bikes until skateboards, guitars, women and then cars took. ( in that order even). Got a great job right out of high school and watched most of my friends still flounder around like they were still in school.( some still act 18, even 20 years later). Had good group of friends going at work and all of us basically drifted into bikes and finding more riders. Now, many years, bikes and $$$ later, still love it even though I'm not a racer of hammerhead, I always have a great time out on two wheels. My wife rides some and I've outfitted most of the family and some friends kids with bikes. I've gotten into doing charity rides more than racing. I'd rather raise money for some people who need it rather than fill or destroy any ego I may have by racing. The weekly group rides we do with the work buddies is better than any race anyway.
Plus, I figure I can eat anything I want. The more junk I put in, the more I'll just have to ride to burn it. Diet does begin with "die", doesn't it?

I was bored and hated winter sports. I love working out but the gyms in town are fitness centres and have no real equipment for people like me. (leg press is key and this gym has one of those crappy cable actuated ones that only goes to 800 pounds) so I took up biking. Fell in love and bought more bikes. Got my gf and cousin into it too.

Always rode when I was a little kid but when I turned 16, I turned away for my old huffy. I started putting on major weight from when I was 16 till I was 19 and ballooneed up to 355lbs. I started working out and thats about the time lance won his 3rd or 4th tour and this town just blew up (Austin, lance's town). I read the story of this guy and figured if he could come back and win this grueling race after almost dying, I could ride a bike. I got a road bike and started riding but got into mountain biking out of pure fun. I found an awesome group of guys, who race, and they babied me along until I built my endurance up. I took my 35lbs AM/FR bike out this past weekend and actually lead the way for most of the ride with those guys. I have made great advances in my endurance :-D
