Cracked Fork Steering Tube Topper - Deal Breaker?
I was tightening the bolt on top of the fork steering tube and the plastic topper cracked. The fork is a suntour xct v4 80mm .I'm guessing the tube is steel or aluminum.
Is that bad? If yes, what should I check for?
If it's just the stem cap (sounds like it), just replace with with a new one, If the fork / (a)headset are correctly installed, the topcap shouldn't even touch the steerer. The stem cap is part of the headset, and not the fork, it's used for preloading the headset bearings.
See here for more info http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-...service#adjust and http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-783591.html
If you have your bearings set and stem tightened you can throw away your top cap. Get a new one if/when you ever have to remove/replace your stem again for any reason.
thank you 4 the links and information. Dodged that bullet
Since you are getting a new top cap, may as well get the aluminium ones. It doesn't break as easily and they come in colors to match your bike or the components.
The lbs just gave me a new plastic one. I was super stoked and grinning ear to ear . Yes, I'm easy to please. Why does everyone hate on lbs? everybody's gotta eat..
