    Mountain bike rebuild help

    I have a 2001 Gary Fisher Tassaja that i got for a song and i love the bike, it handles well the shock is in great condition and the ride is smooth but all is not perfect in candy land, The drive train is a mess, it was sadly left to the weather and many of the cogs are showing some good wear as well as the smallest fornt chainring being almost completely worn out and after replacing the chain it is skipping more than it is catching .Now the point , im going to replace my cassette for sure , but i am wondering if i should also replace my chainrings/crank set (whichever is cheaper) and my drealier. I would like to replace it with the best possible components i can get for 100-150 price range.

    You definitely need to replace the chainrings or crankset as well. The chain and cogs/rings wear together, and a new chain on a worn chainring is likely to be worse than the old chain on the worn chainring. The derailer does not take any torque, it's on the unloaded side of the chain, so that should not be worn. However, if the rest of the drivetrain was neglected, the derailer may also have suffered from not being properly adjusted for a long time.

    At 100-150 bucks, you can have a shimano deore crankset, cassette and rear mech. Deore is about the baseline for replacement components; pretty durable and smooth running. Not much point replacing parts with anything cheaper than that if you ask me.

    If you don't need to replace the derailer, you could go for an slx crankset (it is very nice IMO) to go with the deore cassette for a total around 150 if you find good deals. I don't know much about FSA or Sram cranks, maybe there's something interesting from them too.

    If the crank is still good and only the chainrings are worn, here in Europe a set of SLX chainrings can be had for about 55 euros (70 dollars?), but if you have any doubt about the crank I'd go for the complete crankset.

    Im pretty confident that the crankset is still in good condition and that all i would need to replace is chainrings, as far as cassettes and chainrings this is an 8 speed bike stock so i dont know about being able to use a deore cassete as they are 9 speed. I know for a fact i need to replace the front derailier so i wouldn't mind some suggestions about that also.here is a list of the stock components that are currently on my bike http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/B...e#.ULzaupPjnYG

    Oh yes I completely forgot that bikes of that vintage aren't 9 speed. You're stuck to an alivio cassette then I guess, otherwise you also need to replace the shifter (is it any good still?). A front derailer is a cheap part. From my favourite bike part mailorder shop a Deore front mech is 22 euros, an XT mech 28 euros... I'd go for the SLX or the XT.

    If it were my bike, I'd save up a bit longer for the whole lot and get:
    SLX front mech - 23 euros
    SLX rear mech - 40 euros
    SLX shifters front and rear - 30 euros
    SLX cassette - 37 euros
    SLX chainring set 24-32-42 - 43 euros

    Total: 173 euros for complete SLX 10-speed drivetrain minus chain and crankset (I suppose the chain you put on is 10spd compatible?).

    Same list for Deore 9 speed parts (plenty good but lacks the prestige of SLX I suppose):
    Deore front mech - 21 euros
    Deore rear mech - 27 euros
    Deore shifters - 25ish? Out of stock for 9spd
    Deore cassette - 25 euros
    Deore chainring set - 37 euros

    Total about 137. I'd stump for the 10spd SLX instead if I were you I'd be hesitant to buy 8 speed parts knowing you're stuck with the lower range components then and it will get harder and harder to obtain those parts in a couple of years' time. And if you tire of the frame, the SLX will be totally worth transferring over to the next one.

    The shifters are still fine on my bike and I have an 8 speed only chain on my bike. My main concern is will my old hub fit a 10 speed cassette because to go to 10 speed I'm going to spend well over 300 dollars and if I'm doing that I'm not going to spend a penny on anything else for that bike for a very very very long time .

    Im wondering if i can mix components like slx and deore xt as long as its all 10 speed stuff, also if i replace my front derallier and my chainrings will i also have to change my shifter even thought my curent one is a perfectly working triple shifter.I appreciate all the help.

    You do not need to change the 3 speed shifter if you replace the derailer and/or chainrings. You can mix any 10speed stuff you like regardless of the series. Also, you can buy a front mech and chainrings that are labeled as "3x9" for a 10speed cassette, it doesn't matter.

    A 10speed shimano cassette fits fine on an 8speed shimano hub. I've heard of some people needing a 1mm spacer because the 10speed cassette was actually narrower, but I've also heard it's a direct swap. It fits for sure though.

    If you are really on a budget and the cassette, front mech and chainrings are the only worn parts, you can of course still pick up an alivio/acera cassette, some non-series chainrings and a deore front mech for maybe 65 total.

    I was merely suggesting upgrading the whole lot because if the chain is gone, the cassette is gone, the chainrings are gone and the front mech is gone, how good can the rest of the parts be?

    Im going with a complete change to the 10 speed shimano, my parents got me a new shimano deore xt crankset as a Christmas gift ( found an awesome deal on it) and i bought a nice deore xt chain, i will be buying a deore derallier as i can get a fairly good deal on it and probably be going with a slx cassette and whichever shifter is cheapest. I am looking forward to the 10 speed swap and think it was the best option for my bike.

    You'll have an awesome bike. Gary Fisher frames have a great reputation, and with a modern 10spd drivetrain it'll be a great bike that feels as new. I really like 10speed, you have great range from the middle chainring for technical parcours, and can handle anything from the big ring on flattish roads or non-technical XC singletrack. Please post pictures when you're done changing it up
