Right now i am riding on the Wheelset that came stock on my giant boulder se. the rim are slightly bend. I know i could get them trued but i am going to start racing this coming summer and thought that maybe i could just get some new wheels that would be lighter and better for racing. If i do choose to do this i would spend less than $200. any suggestions on a wheelset. Also if i could get suggestions for more expensivve wheelsets i could try to buy used that would be great. thanks

My advice, spend the $20 bucks and get your wheels trued, then buy a "Race Day" only set of wheels.
Beat up your existing while training, keep you lightweight ones for raceday.

Well if your into cross country racing, i suggest using shimano XT hubs front and rear, or try that HUgi hayes hub you find on ebay for 20ish. I used it for my last wheelset and i loved it. Then use Sun rims, i use 0 degree lite but thats non disc pure XC and road. So its not the strongest out there, or try velocity. I think thgey make very good rims. Buy DT competition spokes 14 guage, and hire a wheelbuilder. Should comee to under 200 dollars and it will be of good quality

7 speeds? I dont know i never see those around so i cant help you there. What do you intend to do with these wheels? just XC? If that, go for the lighter weight sun rims. UFO, 0 degree lite, 0 degree XC. Velocity is nice but sun is light . And just an XT front hub.

Sun RhinoLite's have good reviews, but I just can't get them to last.... That's why I bought the DeeMax's.... Hoping they'll last awhile.

Really..... I usually went thru two wheelsets/year @ $120/set. I'm hoping to at least get 1 ½ yrs. outta these. Any time past that will be considered "On The House" sort of speak....

I haven't destroyed a front in a while. Rear wheels, except my 321d I go through periodically. But really my ht's aren't used as a huckers (trail/skinnies only) and my big bike has a 24" 36 hole wheel, so its pretty tough. I also don't go over 5ft (once only) and am ok smooth. I have a feeling I will break more this coming year though (I have some lofty goals).
jdog, I would also pitch in a vote for rynos...for almost everyone they are more than strong enough and cheap

so with the 7 speed thing it would be ok to get a 8/9 speed hub and use a spacer. Also if that is true to upgrade to 8 in the back would i just need a new casette and shifter and maybe deralier depending on if mine can do 7. Its and Alivo.

Yeah, a spacer is all you'll need to run 7-speed.
Upgrading to 8 or 9 may be more costly than what you initially think. You'll also need a new chain, (the width is smaller for 8 AND again smaller for 9). You'll also need new chainrings (new complete set of cranks makes more sense economically) since the width of the chain is smaller.
Uggghhh it gets complicated. Chances are your rear derailleur will still work, but your front derailleur will not.

However, changing 7/8 to 9 speed will be expensive. It is possible to use the front and rear deraillers, and the crank sprockets, but you definitely have to change the chain, cassette and the changers. I did this two years ago on my Tandem, so I know it is possible without any mishaps on either derailler or Crank sprockets. However it is better to change the rear derailler as there is a difference on the unit. On the Tandem, on which everything has to be heavy duty, I still replace the crank sprockets with 8 speed as these are thicker than the 9 speed, but we have no problems at all. As we still have an 8 speed crankset, we have not had to change the front derailler either and this works perfectly.
As to whether it is worth the expense of changing, is debatable, but that extra gear by going to 8 speed does not give a wider range of gears, but that 32t on the 9 speed is well worth it.

Well if your budjet is 200 i would get something better than that. I say get some XT hubs front and rear, matched with Rhyno lites and DT competition spokes. Hire a guy to build your wheels, you will be under 200 and it will be of high quality.

Or you could get a set of used Mavic Crossrides or possibly Crossmaxes for that price....seen Crossrides new go for that. Ive loved all Mavic wheelsets ive ridden, and the Crossmax XL's are sweeeeeeet. No wheel building necessary.

Please dont flame me for this but....mavic is horribly overpriced. A well built wheel from high quality components will be just as strong and easy to service. I did not even pay 320 for my wheelset and its actually ligher anyways.

The Crossmax XL's arent really made to be all that light, their meant to be beat on...but just not to the extent of FR rims. You could find CMsl's for $400 flat, light and aero. I really like Mavics stuff, but I would never pay full price for it....the retail on the XL's is something like $600. I rode some XL's for a few days and thought that they were an amazing wheelset, especially for a price you can find them. The only Sun rim I would think of getting would be the 8track...but it truely is funny how people always say Rhynolite, the rims arent that nice...not to mention ****mano hubs arent exactly top notch.
