Bought a bike on CL. Can you tell me if it is a good bike?
Hello All,
I dont know much about bikes. I bought this off of CL for $550. Owner told me the frame was an '01 Moab and that he made a ton of upgrades. Any insights would be appreciated as I know little about bikes. It seems to ride well.
Thanks!

$550 That seems high. I regularly see name brand Specialized, Trek, Cannondale mtbs for hundreds less than that. Maybe I'm missing something but shouldn't you ask about a bike before you spend $550 on it?

Def an older bike...mid-late 90s. Xtr bits are nice. King headset, a decent bike by every means..half that price probably would have been better (to me atleast)

Well... Its a nice bike and if you like it then money well spent. Now would I have paid $550 for it? No. You can get a new decent entry level hardtail for that much and itll have newer components and disc brakes.

That's not a not a Chris King headset and it looks like a parts bin build quite honestly. As long as you think you got a good deal and your happy why let someone pick apart something you like? Like asked before...why didn't you ask before you spent the money if it was a good deal or not?

..like a $20-30 blackburn pump? even a lezyne micro drive isn't much money.
listen, don't get discouraged. DO learn from this and ask for opinions *before* buying your next bike new or used. and this bike is fine to ride. hit the trails and have fun.

1997 Moab 3 Aluminium: https://web.archive.org/web/199701081...atalog/13.html
Brand new in 1997 with the original parts it had a MSRP of $599.95
https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...(02)&Type=bike
*Bikepedia have the wrong colors for this bike, it should be Kandy Blue or Kandy Red.
What was said about the 1998 Moab 3 Aluminium:
Men’s Journal said this bike "should have been named ‘the Cannibal,’ because it eats-up everything in its class." If you’ve got an appetite for maximum performance at a minuscule cost, dinner is served.

I think we shouldn't ask this kind of questions in any forum if you already purchased the bike. Ask b4 buying, and check what brand-new bikes can be found in LBS to compare. However, I really doubt I would pay 500$ for a 12 years old bike.
From the pictures given it is impossible to get an idea wherther it is a good bike or not. WHat you should tell us is:
- Rear dereilleur and shifters model/brand and year if possible.
- Same information for shifters and fork.
- Bike weight.

I am sure that you could still have $500 worth of fun out of it, but do a little more research on your next bike. You should have a little more experience with what you might want or need. Good luck.

I have a 96 Norco Nitro, XT/SLX mountain mix! I'll let it go for sey-$600., cheap by these standards. I'll even ship it to the lower 48!

Bike85, welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, I think that you paid too much. Don't worry too much about it, I learned this same lesson the hard way. This is a fine rideable bike, just not worth $550. Schwinn makes fine bikes but they don't hold their value very well. I'm referring to bike shop Schwinns. Dept store Schwinns have little or no value after they have been taken out of the store.
