total newb question (front suspension adjustment)

The forks on my Giant Boulder SE dive under braking, and dive when I stand up to pedal. I want to minimize the dive. I assume I turn the top adjusters (marked -P+) towards the +? I'm used to S-F adjusters for motorcycles (Soft or Firm)...what does P stand for? Preload?

Sorry I'm a total newb. just use this bike for gettin to class and whatnot, and the squishy fork is annoying.

P is preload... yes, crank up the preload and it should bob a bit less. I have mine all the way open and it bobs a little bit, but I'm only 130 lbs.

no amount of preload would keep you from bobbing on the standard springs. I swear they're setup for someone about 180 lbs or so.
