I bought my Hardrock for £400 and put £800 of upgrades into it.... i dont consider it a waste of parts on such a low end frame because i love the way my hardrock frame rides, i wish i had upgraded the fork rather than all my XT kit though!

I have spent about 5600$cdn on all three bikes at this point. My Kona Roast being the most expensive (initial cost was high)

Over the years ya. Right now with the z150, new in 2002 it would have cost me like 2500$ (bikes were more then with less stuff)
The bighit cost me 1900$ - upgrades of about 600$...so I guess they are about the same.

I remember just one day at the LBS. They were ringing me up, and I asked if they could tell me just how much I have spent there. I saw the amount on the screen, but what got burnt into my memmory was $Yipes. Then I quickly justified it... amount of riding I do and the number of bikes I have/gone through. They then showed me the breakdown... since then I have tripled my maintenace.
I still think of it as a badge of honor. Money spent well on something that has been very useful... not to mention rewarding and FUN.

First of all, if the money spent actually improves your bike, it was worth it. Second, if spending money on a bike makes you get out and ride it more, then it's a great investment. Think of all the other things you could be wasting money on!
It's not like those idiots I see who take a $4000 piece-of-junk Honda Civic, add $10,000 worth of wheels, tires, exhaust system, spoilers, ground effects, and ridiculous paint only to end up with a $14,000 piece-of-junk Honda Civic that makes more noise.

No doubt. I did it for my "cheap SS beater" and found out that I spent $400 on it when all was said and done. Hmm that wasn't cheap.

I probably have $5k+ sunk into my bike but that's over a period of three years and that includes a replacement frame. At this point, there is literally nothing factory on my frame except the shock.

I only tally up totals for bike parts I SELL -- makes me look like a hero when justifying expenses to the boss lady.
For purchases, approximate ballpark rough estimates rounded down are good enough, and parts that cost less than $40 or are less than 25% retail might not get counted!
Hell, with that kind of accounting, I impress myself sometimes.

Well, my first "real" mnt bike cost me $400 (in 1992 - the Trek) and I later added over $800 in wheels and another $150ish in my Gripshifts. So, $950 worth of upgrades on a $400 bike. Kinda of dumb....? Nope, I moved them over to the '95 Attitude. The Trek is back to stock and the Attitude has over $5000 in it.
It's a good money-pit by my estimations and I still have it after 10 years!
