Help chainguard alivio bolts loose
 

Hi guys,

I've looked for this before and also looked for a more specific forum for it but couldn't find it. If there is one please accept my apologies and point me out in the right direction.

Right, my problem is that yesterday while trying to tighten my chainguard on my alivio crankset I realised that the bolts no longer worked. They spin and it is really impossible to connect them securely to the gear.

If on its own they do attach correctly to the gear but not through the plastic cover. So there's something wrong with the groves on the plastic chainguard I assume.

I was wondering if this part was replaceable or maybe using larger / longer bolts would work. Any ideas are highly appreciated :)

The Alivio component group is not made from the strongest steel. It can strip out easily. If you can get the screws to back out you can try a couple of options. Get some Locktite Threadlocker. An auto parts store should have a variety. It comes in a variety of strengths. Snug the screw up as tight as possible and leave alone until the locktite does its work.

A second option is to tap out the whole with a tap and dye kit and just go up a size of screw.

Of course you can always just remove the chain guard. I haven't had one for years. If I have to right with pants on I just use a velcro strap to keep the pant leg out of the chain.

Yeah I do commute in my bike and I also have something like that but in reflective yellow / green colour.

But to be honest these days its sooo cold that I end up just wearing my bike tights (polaris) so getting trousers stuck in gears is a thing of the past for me. I just didn't think of ... not having the cover... when it fell off it felt like an important part of the bike.
