    105 5600 Triple Crankset with 9-speed Mountain setup?

    I have a 5600 105 10-speed triple crankset and BB laying around (50-39-30T). It will be going on a 26er hardtail 9-speed Deore setup (Deore shifters, Deore front der, Deore LX rear der, 9-speed XT cassette).

    Any reason why this will not work? Will the 105 road crank/BB have chainline issues or anything? I'm not worried about front shifting as I know that'll work fine.

    I know, the 50T big gear is kinda overkill. I just don't see the need to spend the cash on a new 9-speed mountain crankset when I have something on-hand that might work.

    I'd be REALLY concerned about chainring clearance at the chainstays. Also, the front derailleur may not play well with the bigger rings. You'll need a longer chain even if it does all fit and cooperate.

    A 9-speed chain may or may not be friendly with 10-speed chainring teeth, as well.

    Pardon my skepticism about what you 'know' will work, but I'd be cautious until I had it together and working.....

    That is a valid point that I'll check, but the frame is an 18" and I know it'll accept a "touring" crank (48T large), so my bet is a 50T will work.

    9-speed and 10 speed chains (in the road world) are the same. I could use a 105/Ultegra chain, but will it play nice with a 9-speed XT rear cassette?

    If a front der. is spec'ed for a 48T crankset, it'll work on a 50T. Been there, done that.

    Use the right tool for the job. The bottom bracket won't work, chainline will be way out of whack.

    An external mtb crank is setup for 68/73 bb cups and uses the bottom bracket spacers included with said bb and the spindle length speaks for the 68/73 setting so you would have to space the bottom bracket out because the 50 tooth will hit the frame and if it doesn't will be close that if it doesn't it will be so close the if the chainring warps, it will hit. When you space that bottom bracket out, there won't be enough spindle showing to clamp down on. IF the bottom bracket spec on the frame is 73 it won't matter since it won't work, it will be too wide.
