This could be an interesting thread. - Not meant to be a duplicate post, figure i post one here for mt bikers not wanting to be roadies
I am a cyclist that does both types of cycling . Road and Mt Biking. I ride more on the road though.

I like ask and get a poll going. wHy do some mt bikers, not ride roadbikes or do any roadmbiking at all. Many avoid it . or some do

We ask. We as a mt biker do you not want to do road biking?

Pro mountain bikers usually do most of their training on road bikes because road bikes improve your fitness without beating up your body. Less serious mountain bikers often don't ride road bikes because of limited time or money.

When I first got serious about "BIKING" all I had was a hardtail. Plus my "KITS" resembled hockey goalie stuff. HEY if was winter. I got a ton of attitude from "some of the roadies." I fell once on a MUP and slid into some rocks and was racked up pretty well. Roadies just rode on by, not a single one checked on me. So I got a bad taste in my mouth for roadies.

Since then I have met a number of good biking people, all kinds. I also have a nice road bike. So I am accepted into the circle just because of what I own, not how I ride. (Kinda Hypocritcal) MTBers tend to be more, hey bro just ride and love the day!

Yesterday I was coming home off the McCullough Hills trail in S. NV. I have about 4 miles of pavement to ride to get home. There were 3 greyhounds all kitted up pretty on Cervelos. They were u-turning onto the same downhill section I was jumping onto. They didn't see me. So I blew past them and kept the lead for about half a mile. They did catch me, all tucked and pounding from the drops. Me and my FS Scott happy to be breaking 30! It was a tasty moment.

But its all good. Biking is biking! People who are jerks on bikes are probably jerks at home and at work.

Been many years since I was mtb only. But back then it was because I didn't see the point in a road bike since the mtb did everything I wanted from trails to commuting on the road, , looked uncomfortable, associated road biking with tight fitting lycra, shaved legs, and snobbery.

Road biking is much more interesting and easier on my body than jogging. I can also leave from my front door, instead of hauling my MTB to a trail.

The fun and challenge is incomparable between road and MTB trail riding. For those who insist on riding MTBs only on the road, however, I do not understand that.

Because they don't want to become addicted to that flying sensation I associate with a good road bike!

I really like mountain biking, but I love road biking. But as said above, all biking is good.

I totally agree with this. I ride all mountain bikes, and use them for on and offroad. I haven't met many roadies, but I get the same vibe from a lot of them as expressed here.

I ride road simply to change things up. However, staring at a long stretch of road for hours on end puts me in a *yawn* trance-like state.

Yup, I'm never really comfortable on the road, never really happy, never stimulated enough with the right things. The trail is serene and peaceful while also being more exciting and keeps me more engaged in riding enjoyment with the trail environment rather than with traffic and cardio and speed.

Where I like to go, it is usually on the MT bike.

This being said, I have a road bike and ride it.

Maybe it is where I ride or...., but the attitudes expressed here about road bikers is not consistent. I think there are snob road bikers and there are others. There are road bikers who zoom past me, they are racing to where they are going all the time. Then there are people like the women who came back to see if I was ok when I was wrenching on the bike. And BTW, I am not young, good looking.....I am old, fat and.... It would have been nice if they were trying to pick me up, but .....

I basically decided to give up golf with the cost of getting better and really doing it consistently. The decision was to go buy a new mtb instead and ride the trails for free.

I have as much in my golf bag and clubs as I do my mountain bike. Even at this time of year golfing in the 105+ heat is $30. Cruising the desert is free. This time of year the pavement is 140+ degrees and the heat just radiates up from the street, even at night. At least the desert cools down to 85 at night.

Nothing against road; started as a roadie anyhow.

For me, it's just that I have way, way more fun on a bike in the woods. Otherwise, I still commute and do stuff around town by bike when I'm not feeling lazy about it.

Road bike time is when trails are too wet to ride. Yeah, my fitness would benefit from more, but whatever. Many of the people I ride with/have ridden with feel the same way.

Having started as a mountain biker back in the late 80's, became a roadie until recently and now coming back to dirt my experience has been that many more mountain biker's own and ride road bikes than road bikers who own or ride mountain bikes. Each discipline has it's benefits, but for the fun factor mountain biking is where it is at for me. But I still ride road- just not as often...

I think each discipline compliments the other. When its too wet to MTB I can ride on the road. When its hot and dry I love being in the shade of a wooded trail. Chosing one over the other then to point out that the other is somehow inferior is rediculous. Its all cycling.

All mindset for me, given my road bike is a fixed gear. Can corner extremely well from railing berms on the dirt jumper, and feel I'm getting more force on the platforms from hammering on the road.

I find it boring, I don't like the type of people who ride road bikes here (mostly tri nerds), and I don't trust traffic enough.

Never really had a mountain bike. Well, I guess I did because that is what it was called way back when I got it, (still have it, a Trek SingleTrak 930, (non-suspension "mountain bike")). I suppose today that bike would be called a hybrid. Anyway, I've always been a road rider, for about 55 years now. I've been thinking the past few years that I need to get a off-road bike so that I can fully appreciate the wonderful world we have, and that it has limited access on a road bike. After spending this past weekend up on Mammoth Mountain, I'm more sold than ever. Never saw so many mountain bikes in one place at one time. There are two seasons in Mammoth . . . ski season and bike season. I just need to define exactly what type of off-road riding I want to do, then research the type of bike I need to get. (There were a lot of roadies on Mammoth too.)

As far as road riding, I love it! The biggest advantage, other than the obvious health benefits, is the ability to traverse large distances in a relatively short time. I agree about one of the disadvantages, it does get boring at times. Especially at about the 80-mile marker on a self-supported century ride. However, I can't imagine ever being able to ride something like that on an off-road bike. That would be silly.

That's messed up I'm a "roadie" and I do gladly stop for anyone with a problem on any kind of bike or look.. I think you're just describing jerks wearing kits
